Complete onboarding when you join an event

Written by Customer Success

When you join an event, the app asks a few questions before it opens the event. These steps are called onboarding, and they create your profile for that event. The steps are the same in the mobile app and the web app; the event decides which of them you see.

When onboarding starts

  • Join code: after you enter it, the event's welcome screen opens.

  • Join link, signed out: the welcome screen opens. Select Get started, then sign in or create an account. A one-click link signs you in without these steps. The app then opens Personal information.

  • Join link, signed in: the welcome screen opens. If you finished onboarding for this event before, the event opens instead.

  • Invite in the app: selecting the event on My events opens the welcome screen. Claim on My invites opens the event the same way as unfinished onboarding.

  • Unfinished onboarding: in the mobile app, opening the event shows Complete onboarding to get started. Select Finish onboarding to go through the steps from the welcome screen, or Go back to return to My events. The web app opens the event at the welcome screen.

Complete the steps

Welcome screen

The screen reads Welcome to and the event name, unless the organizer wrote their own text. Select Get started.

Personal information

  1. Check First name, Last name, Company / Organization and Job title. They are filled in from your Brella account. All four are required.

  2. Optional: select the camera icon to add a profile photo, or Edit cover to add a cover photo. See Manage your account settings for the photo options.

  3. Answer the organizer's questions if the step shows any. Questions marked with an asterisk are required.

  4. Select Complete profile.

The name, company, job title and photos belong to your Brella account. A change here shows in all your events.

Set up your event profile

This step starts your networking profile. It appears when the organizer asks attendees to set up networking while they join, and networking is on for your ticket.

  • Select Get started to continue. The screen estimates 1-2 min.

  • If the organizer allows it, I'll do it later skips the networking steps. The mobile app asks Skip networking?: "You won't be able to chat or schedule meetings yet." Select Skip for now to open the event, or Continue setup. In the web app, your browser asks the same question; confirm it to skip.

Personalize your profile

This step appears at some events. Choose the options that describe you, such as your role, industry and function, and answer the organizer's questions. Some questions appear only after you choose a matching option. Select Continue.

Select your interests

This step appears at events that match attendees by interest. Select at least one topic you want to meet people about. If a topic has several goals, a sheet named after the topic opens; select the goals that apply. Each selection is saved at once. Select Continue.

Tell others about yourself

  1. Enter your Introduction. It is required and can be up to 280 characters; the counter shows how many are left. The field starts with your last introduction, or with "Hi! I would like to meet new people at this event." if you have none. Replace it with your own text.

  2. Optional: under Where do you operate?, choose the countries you work in.

  3. Select Continue.

Your introduction belongs to this event. The countries belong to your account.

Choose days when you're free to network

This step appears at multi-day events where meetings can be booked on more than one day. All days are selected. Clear the days when you don't want meetings and keep at least one. You can block specific times later; see Set your networking availability.

Select Join the event, or Continue if the organizer booked meetings for you.

Your pre-booked meetings

If the organizer booked meetings for you, this screen lists them, also when you skipped networking. Select Join the event. See Meetings arranged by your organizer.

For more on the networking steps, see Set up your networking profile.

After onboarding

The event opens on its Home screen. If notifications are off, the sheet Get alerted when ... offers Enable notifications and Not now. See Turn on push notifications.

When onboarding has only two steps

At some events, onboarding is the welcome screen and Personal information only. After Complete profile, the event opens without a networking profile. If the organizer booked meetings for you, Your pre-booked meetings comes first. You can't chat or schedule meetings until you set one up with Networking > Start networking. See Set up your networking profile.

If networking is off for your ticket, onboarding also ends after Personal information.

Your event profile and your account

  • Your Brella account, for all events: first name, last name, company, job title, profile photo, cover photo and the countries under Where do you operate?.

  • This event only: your introduction, your Personalize your profile choices, your interests and goals, your available days and your answers to the organizer's questions.

Change your answers later

Select your profile picture, or Edit event profile on the Home screen. Under Event settings:

  • Edit event information: your introduction and your Personalize your profile choices.

  • Edit my interests and Edit my availability.

  • Start join process again: runs onboarding again from the welcome screen, or from Set up your event profile if you skipped networking. It is the only way to change your answers to the organizer's questions.

Your name, company and job title are under Account settings > Personal information. See Manage your account settings.

Good to know

  • A progress bar and a step count such as Step 2 of 5 show where you are. The web app shows the count above the step title; the mobile app shows it at the top of the screen.

  • To return to the previous step, select Back in the web app or the back arrow in the mobile app.

  • In a browser window 1024 px or wider, the networking steps show a preview of your profile card on the right. It updates as you type, and you can change your photos on it.

  • In the web app, Need help? at the top of the steps opens Brella's Attendee Support pages.
