Virtual meetings open a video room provided by Whereby. The room has its own controls for the microphone, camera and speakers. Brella needs permission to use your camera and microphone before the room can use them.
Allow camera and microphone access
Mobile app: the first time you join a call, your phone asks for permission. The iPhone prompts read "Grant your microphone access to allow you to speak during 1:1 video calls with other event participants." and "Grant your camera access so you can turn on your video during meetings, upload pictures, or scan QR codes." Select Allow. If you declined earlier, turn on Camera and Microphone for the app in your phone's settings.
Web app: the browser asks for permission when the room opens. Select Allow. If you blocked it earlier, select the icon to the left of the address bar, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.
To check the microphone permission, open Account > Troubleshoot. The Microphone row shows Allowed, Not allowed yet or Blocked. It is for information only: it has no fix button and does not move to Needs attention. If it doesn't show Allowed, allow access as described above.
Inside an event, the Microphone check appears only if the event is virtual or hybrid and you don't attend in person. The Camera check appears only when the event uses lead scanning or pitch reels for you.
Where the room opens
Web app in a window 1024 px or wider: the room opens in a separate pop-up window with a preview step. Allow pop-ups for the web app. If the browser blocks the pop-up, the room opens inside the Brella page instead, without the room's people and chat panels.
Web app in a narrower window: the room opens inside the Brella page.
Mobile app: the room opens inside the app. The screen title is Call with {first name} for a 1:1 meeting and Group video call for a group meeting.
Choose your devices
In the preview step, check that the camera shows your image and that the microphone meter reacts to your voice.
Use the room's device menus to switch camera, microphone or speakers. The exact controls are Whereby's and change with their updates.
Join the room.
The camera icon in the meeting chat opens the room of any accepted meeting at any time, so you can test it before the meeting. Opening the room does not call or notify the other person.
Troubleshooting
No sound or no video in the call
Check the device selected in the room's controls. Close other apps that use the camera or microphone. On the mobile app, check the app's permissions in your phone's settings. On the web app, check the site permissions in the browser.
The other person can't hear you
Your microphone is muted in the room, or the app has no microphone permission. Run Account > Troubleshoot and check that Microphone shows Allowed.
There is no camera icon in the meeting chat
The icon appears only for accepted meetings. It is hidden when you and the other person both attend in person.
"This meeting does not have a video call link"
Brella creates the room in the background when the meeting request is sent. Wait a moment, then try again. If the message stays, ask the organizer.
The pop-up does not open (web app)
Your browser blocked it. Allow pop-ups for the web app and select the camera icon again, or use the room that opens inside the page.
Echo or feedback
Use headphones, or mute yourself when you are not speaking.
The call fails on a company network or VPN
Video calls run through Whereby. Ask IT to allow *.whereby.com (rooms are on brella.whereby.com); see Network and firewall requirements. Try your mobile hotspot to confirm the cause.
Nothing else helps
Open Account > App cache and select Clear app cache, then open the meeting again. If it still fails, select Account > Log out and sign in again.
